What Is Venetian Plaster?
Venetian plaster is a mineral based wall finish made from slaked lime and marble dust. It is applied by hand in thin, compressed layers using a steel trowel. Each layer is burnished to build depth, sheen, and a surface that resembles polished stone.
The result is a finish with visible movement and light reflection that changes throughout the day. Depending on the number of layers and the burnishing technique, the surface can range from a soft matte to a mirror like high polish. No two walls look exactly the same.
Roman clay is a closely related finish with a softer, more matte texture and less sheen. Marmorino sits between the two, offering a smoother surface with subtle stone like veining. All three are mineral based, breathable, and built to last decades with minimal maintenance.

Venetian Plaster Applications for Orange County Homes
Feature Walls
The most popular application. One plaster feature wall in a living room, dining room, or entryway creates a focal point that reads as intentional, high end design. Pairs with painted walls on the remaining surfaces.
Fireplace Surrounds
Venetian plaster or Roman clay applied to a fireplace surround transforms the room's anchor point. The polished mineral surface catches light and creates depth that paint or tile cannot match.
Full Room Application
ll four walls finished in plaster for an immersive, gallery like space. Works best in rooms with natural light where the surface movement and sheen shift throughout the day.
Bathroom Walls
Venetian plaster in a primary bathroom creates a spa like atmosphere. When sealed properly, it handles humidity and pairs naturally with stone, brass, and wood fixtures.
Kitchen Backsplash Area
A seamless plaster surface behind the range or sink as an alternative to tile. Clean, modern, and unique. Requires proper sealing for moisture and heat resistance.
Niches & Alcoves
Plaster applied inside built in niches, arched alcoves, or display shelves adds depth and texture to small architectural features that would otherwise go unnoticed.

The Riot Standard for Venetian Plaster
Venetian plaster is the most technically demanding finish in residential work. Each layer must be applied at the right thickness, compressed at the right angle, and burnished at the right moment. Too early and the surface tears. Too late and it will not polish. A plasterer without formal training will produce a finish that looks cloudy, uneven, or scratched.

Trained in the Country That Invented It
Venetian plaster originated in Italy and became a standard finish across European craft training programs. Riot's founder trained for 11 years in France in formal programs where Venetian plaster, Marmorino, and lime based mineral finishes are part of the core curriculum. Not an elective. Not a weekend workshop.
That training means every Riot plaster project is executed with correct layer compression, proper cure timing between coats, and burnishing technique matched to the selected sheen. The result is a surface that holds its depth, polish, and consistency for decades.
Before any plaster is applied, we produce a physical sample board in your selected finish. You hold it against your wall and approve the exact tone, texture, and sheen before we start.

Answers to the most common questions from Orange County homeowners about Venetian plaster, Roman clay, cost, and durability.
How much does Venetian plaster cost in Orange County?
Venetian plaster typically ranges from $8 to $20 per square foot depending on finish type, number of layers, and surface condition. A single feature wall starts around $2,500. Full room applications vary based on square footage and finish level. We provide a written quote after the consultation.
What is the difference between Venetian plaster and Roman clay?
Venetian plaster is compressed and burnished to a smooth, polished surface with visible sheen. Roman clay is softer, more matte, and has a subtle texture. Both are mineral based and hand applied. The choice depends on the look you want. We can show you sample boards of each.
How long does Venetian plaster last?
Properly applied Venetian plaster lasts 15 to 20+ years. It hardens over time and develops a natural patina. Minor scuffs can be buffed or touched up without re-plastering the full wall. It is one of the most durable wall finishes available.
Can Venetian plaster be used in bathrooms?
Yes. Venetian plaster works in bathrooms when sealed with a wax or topcoat designed for moisture. It handles humidity well and creates a spa like atmosphere. It should not be used in direct shower spray areas.
What is the difference between Venetian plaster and limewash?
Venetian plaster is compressed and polished for a smooth, stone like surface with visible sheen. Limewash is softer, matte, and chalky with natural tonal movement. Both are mineral based. Venetian plaster is more dramatic. Limewash is more subtle. We apply both.
How long does a Venetian plaster project take?
A single feature wall takes 2 to 4 days depending on finish level and number of layers. Full rooms take longer. Each layer requires cure time between coats. We confirm the timeline in your written quote.
