Board & Batten
Vertical battens on a painted field. The most forgiving style on a wall that is not quite square, and the one that reads modern in almost any room.
Shaker Panel
Flat recessed panels with square edges. The quietest of the styles and the slowest to date. Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams in satin or semi-gloss.
Raised Panel
Profiled panels with a moulded edge. Traditional and heavier, and the closest thing to original millwork in an older Orange County home.
Picture Frame Moulding
Applied moulding boxes on the existing wall. The lightest touch and the least invasive. Popular in dining rooms and hallways.
Full Height Panelling
Panelling carried floor to ceiling rather than stopping at a rail. Makes the wall read as architecture instead of decoration, and it suits a tall room.
Chair Rail & Wainscot Cap
Panelling capped at chair rail height, around thirty two to thirty six inches. The traditional proportion, and it protects the wall people actually brush past.

How Wainscoting Changes a Room

A builder grade fireplace surround in flat white paint makes the room feel unfinished. A limewash, textured, or color treated surround makes it feel designed.
The application depends on the existing surface. Smooth drywall takes paint, limewash, or texture directly. Brick can be limewashed for a soft, organic look or painted for a clean modern finish. Stone surrounds can be painted or left natural with the surrounding wall treated.
