What Is Roman Clay?
Roman clay is a mineral based wall finish made from natural clay and lime, applied by hand in thin layers with a steel trowel. Each layer builds soft depth and a surface with the warmth and texture of natural stone.
The result is a finish with gentle movement and a soft, matte surface that shifts with the light throughout the day. Depending on how it is troweled, the look ranges from a smooth, even tone to a cloudy, suede like texture. No two walls look exactly the same.
Roman clay is breathable, low odor, and built to last for years with minimal maintenance. It works beautifully on smooth drywall and pairs naturally with wood, stone, and warm metal fixtures. It is the matte, livable side of mineral plaster: real depth, without the high gloss.

Roman Clay Applications for Orange County Homes
Feature Walls
The most popular application. One Roman clay feature wall in a living room, dining room, or entryway creates a focal point that reads as intentional, high end design. Pairs with painted walls on the remaining surfaces.
Fireplace Surrounds
Roman clay applied to a fireplace surround transforms the room's anchor point. The matte mineral surface adds warmth and depth that paint or tile cannot match.
Full Room Application
All four walls finished in Roman clay for an immersive, gallery like space. Works best in rooms with natural light, where the soft texture and tonal movement shift throughout the day.
Bathroom Walls
Roman clay in a primary bathroom creates a spa like atmosphere. When sealed properly, it handles humidity and pairs naturally with stone, brass, and wood fixtures.
Kitchen Backsplash Area
A seamless Roman clay surface behind the range or sink as an alternative to tile. Clean, modern, and unique. Requires proper sealing for moisture and heat resistance.
Niches & Alcoves
Roman clay applied inside built in niches, arched alcoves, or display shelves adds depth and texture to small architectural features that would otherwise go unnoticed.

The Riot Standard for Roman Clay
Roman clay rewards a trained hand. Each layer has to go on at the right thickness, worked at the right angle and the right moment. Rushed or uneven application leaves blotches, trowel marks, and patchy tone. The effortless look on the wall takes real technique to produce.

Trained Where the Craft Is Taught
Lime and clay mineral finishes have been part of French and Italian craft training for generations. Riot's founder trained in France over a decade in formal programs where Roman clay and lime based mineral finishes are part of the core curriculum. Not an elective. Not a weekend workshop.
That training means every Riot clay project is executed with correct layer thickness, proper cure timing between coats, and trowel technique matched to your selected texture. The result is a surface that holds its depth and consistency for years.
Before any clay is applied, we produce a physical sample board in your selected finish. You hold it against your wall and approve the exact tone and texture before we start.

Roman Clay FAQ, Irvine & Orange County
Answers to the most common questions from Orange County homeowners about Roman clay, cost, durability, and finish options.
How much does Roman clay cost in Orange County?
Roman clay typically ranges from $8 to $18 per square foot depending on the number of layers, surface condition, and finish. A single feature wall starts around $2,500. Full room applications vary based on square footage. We provide a written quote after the consultation.
What is the difference between Venetian plaster and Roman clay?
Venetian plaster is compressed and burnished to a smooth, higher sheen surface. Roman clay is softer, matte, and more textured, with a warm, organic look. Riot specializes in Roman clay and matte mineral finishes, the look most Orange County homeowners are after. We can show you sample boards.
How long does Roman clay last?
Properly applied Roman clay lasts 10 to 15+ years indoors. It develops a natural patina over time, and minor scuffs can be touched up without redoing the full wall. Sealed, it stands up well to everyday wear.
Can Roman clay be used in bathrooms?
Yes. Roman clay works in bathrooms when sealed with a topcoat designed for moisture. It handles humidity well and creates a spa like atmosphere. It should not be used in direct shower spray areas.
What is the difference between Roman clay and limewash?
Roman clay is troweled in layers for a smooth, suede like matte surface with subtle depth. Limewash is thinner and chalkier, with more visible, cloudy tonal movement. Both are mineral based and matte. Roman clay reads more solid and modern; limewash reads softer and more weathered. We apply both.
How long does a Roman clay project take?
A single feature wall takes 2 to 3 days depending on the number of layers. Full rooms take longer. Each layer requires cure time between coats. We confirm the timeline in your written quote.
