What Is Venetian Plaster?

Lime, Marble and a Steel Trowel

Venetian plaster is a lime based plaster mixed with fine marble powder. It goes on in several very thin coats, and each one is pressed and polished with a steel trowel. The result is a hard, smooth surface with real depth and a soft sheen, anywhere from a satin glow to a high polish.

Not every Venetian finish is glossy. Marmorino is the matte version, with more body and a honed stone look. Travertine plaster adds fine voids and veining so the wall reads like cut stone. For a ceiling or niche that shimmers, we use metallic plaster finishes such as Meoded Sapphire Metallic.

Because the color sits inside the material, Venetian plaster ages well, and small marks can be repaired in place. We apply Meoded Stucco Lamundo and Marmorino Tintoretto most often, and Vasari when a project calls for it.

Where Venetian Plaster Works in Orange County Homes

Feature Walls

One wall behind a sofa, a bed or a dining table, finished to look like polished stone.

Fireplaces

A seamless surround with no grout lines, from the hearth to the ceiling.

Powder Rooms

Small room, big impact. Sealed so it handles moisture and daily use.

Entries and Hallways

The first wall guests see, and the one they touch most. Venetian plaster is hard enough to take it.

Ceilings and Niches

A soft polished glow in a coffered ceiling, a dome or a recessed shelf. Metallic plaster works well here.

Full Rooms

For clients who want the whole room wrapped in one continuous finish, usually marmorino for a calmer matte look.

The Riot Standard for Venetian Plaster

Venetian plaster shows every flaw underneath it, so prep is most of the job. Each coat has to go on at the right thickness and be burnished at the right moment. Rushed work leaves trowel marks, dull patches and a sheen that changes across the wall.

Trained Where the Craft Is Taught

Our founder trained in decorative finishes in France and holds the Mention Faux Finish, the French national credential in decorative painting. He is also a Meoded certified applicator.

He specifies every Venetian project and inspects the finished wall. Our crew is trained to his method.

At the walkthrough we look at your light and your wall, then recommend the sheen that fits the room.
